Note: In all these examples of children representing their mathematical thinking on paper, they did so

freely and spontaneously, without out any adult asking or suggesting they do so. And since there were always pens, other writing tools and paper nearby, the children could freely communicate in this

way. Essentially, frequently representing and communicating their thinking through graphicacy and

talk, is embedded ithe culture of the pre-schools, nurseries and schools they attended.
