Our sustained programme of research and development has been conducted over more than 30 years, influencing perspectives of young children's capacity to use and understand graphical languages, and to use their Mathematical Graphics to communicate their mathematical thinking. In some local authorities and settings and in many universities it has stimulated interest in young children's own mathematics, and in Children's Mathematical Graphics, with interest from England and internationally especially notable.
This has aroused some considerable interest and debate, challenging conventional wisdom about children's learning and strengths in early childhood. In England, this has resulted in support for our work in a number of governmental and independent reviews and reports, including Children Thinking Mathematically, (DCSF, 2009), which we were commissioned by the government to write.
