Louisa (5 years, 1
month) was adding strawberries. Combining pictorial
and written with the numeral ‘6’ she read: ‘2
strawberries and four more altogether 6’.
She used the words ‘and
four more’ as a place holder (and in place of) the
‘+’ sign as she experimented with the role of
function of the mathematical sign for ‘plus’; and
the word ‘altogether’ in place of the sign for
equals: ‘=’. |
